Red Dirt, based in and around
Stillwater, Oklahoma, is a rising genre of music that can best be likened to the
Indie genre of
Rock 'n' Roll; there is no definitive sound that can be
attributed to all the bands in the movement. It can be
described as a mix of
Southern Rock,
Outlaw country, and
Texas Honky Tonk, with even a few Mexican influences.
Although Stillwater is the Nashville of Red Dirt music,
bands hail from both Oklahoma and Texas; most are not based out of Stillwater in the way
that their mainstream counterparts are based in Nashville.
The name Red Dirt comes from the soil in Oklahoma and Texas. It is an outstanding feature of the region and comes from the large amounts of iron oxide found in the soil, which give it the classic red tint.
