Chicago soul is a form of
soul music that arose during the
1960s in Chicago. Along with Motown in Detroit and
hard-edged, gritty performers in Memphis (see
Memphis soul), Chicago soul helped spur the
album-oriented soul revolution of the early
1970s.
The best known Chicago soul singer was Curtis Mayfield; Jackie Wilson, The Esquires, Major Lance, Tyrone Davis, The Chi-Lites, Barbara Acklin, and Gene Chandler, along with producers Carl Davis and Johnny Pate, are also associated with this sound.
